Renewable Energy In-line Hydro Set to Commission

The City is excited to announce that its renewable energy project, Dee Hydro, will soon be commissioned.
Back in 2019, the City of Hood River began exploring the possibility of harnessing the power of its water system to generate electricity. Called in in-line hydro system, Dee Hydro will generate electricity from the groundwater springs located on the slopes of Mount Hood, which flow into a main 24-inch waterline to supply water to the City of Hood River.
The project has faced challenges, including negotiating a private property easement, approval of water rights, and passing a pressure surge analysis. The Hood River City Council has maintained its dedication to the project, which is a critical step in helping the City to realize its goal of reaching net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2035.
Dee Hydro’s impact on energy generation and reduction of carbon dioxide will depend on various factors, however, it is estimated to generate approximately 16,000,000 kilowatt hours over the first 30 years. The City thanks partners Energy Trust of Oregon for project funding via a construction incentive, and the Oregon Department of Energy for support from their Community Renewable Energy Grant Program.
