Maintaining Safe Streets and Sidewalks for Travel

Traveling during the winter months can be challenging for everyone, whether you’re walking, biking, using transit, or driving. It is essential for all of us to cooperate and comply with regulations to keep the City’s right-of-way clear and our streets safe, especially in the winter. Maintaining clear sidewalks and following proper snow removal procedures is a shared responsibility.
The right-of-way refers to the area designated for public streets, sidewalks, and utilities. City code requires property owners to keep the sidewalks and curbs adjacent to their property in safe, serviceable condition for pedestrians and vehicles. Unfortunately, every year, many sidewalks become impassable due to non-compliance with these codes.
When clearing snow from sidewalks, please place the snow in your yard, and not on the curbs or in the streets. The City also appreciates your help in keeping catch basins clear to keep water flowing and prevent streets from flooding. Additionally, if you know the location of your nearest fire hydrant, please help keep it clear of snow.
Following winter street regulations not only helps to keep our streets safe, it is also vital for effective snow removal. Street parking is restricted during significant snowfall for snow plowing. Avoid parking on the street when possible. City crews cannot lift their plows near driveways, which leaves excess snow in the roadway. If you encounter a snowplow or sander on the road, follow these safe driving tips:
- Give plows and sanding trucks room to maneuver; do not follow too closely.
- Do not pass trucks when snow is being plowed or sand is being applied.
- Do not pull out into the intersection when snowplow trucks are approaching.
The City of Hood River appreciates your cooperation in keeping public rights-of-way safe and clear this winter!
