Message from the Mayor

As I write to you all, so many of us are feeling a great sense of uncertainty. I’ve received many questions asking if the current federal policies and funding changes have affected the City. The short answer is “not so far”. While we do receive some federal funds – including funds from the State that are dependent on federal funds – the City is fortunate to have diverse revenue streams, and we haven’t had any projects evaporate.
I also am often asked about immigration enforcement. Because of a decades-long commitment by Oregon, we live in a sanctuary state. Local law enforcement does not assist with immigration enforcement. Our local officers cannot interfere with federal agents in their work, so this non-cooperation does not protect our residents from federal immigration enforcement. Despite our limitations, I stress that our police will not assist with federal immigration agents, and continue to be a resource for the community.
I’ve never faced this situation before. But, despite the current climate of uncertainty, our work as a City does not stop. We will continue to maintain our roads, water and wastewater systems, address our housing shortage, streamline our processes, and find new ways to engage with our community.
In spite of it all, I hope you are enjoying the fall colors and moist autumn. The mountains are white, the days are short. Be well all.
Onward! Adelante! Mayor Paul
