Message from the Mayor

I hope everyone continues to enjoy summer in the community. Please remember to exercise caution: we are not out of danger from catastrophic fires or from the COVID-19 pandemic.
Until we have significant rain and much lower temperatures combined, threats of wildfire continue. We appreciate everyone’s continued awareness and reminders to others to take every precaution.
The pandemic also continues. I encourage everyone to get vaccinated who isn’t yet as it’s our best tool to protect us all. As of this writing over 94% of all new Covid-19 cases have been in unvaccinated people. Wearing masks in public indoor spaces is again a requirement in Oregon to get better control of the viral spread.
As summer comes to an end, City Council and community members will interview four finalists for the City Manager position. A community reception to meet the finalists is scheduled for Tuesday, September 7, at 6:00 p.m. at the Stratton Rose Garden. Visit this link for more info. We hope to conclude the selection process by early September and will be sure to share related news. While City Council met remotely for over a year, we realized public attendance and participation in meetings were higher. In-person meetings with new added options for remote attendance or participation are going well. Recorded meetings can also be viewed later if you miss the live meeting.
Finally, I’d like to thank the record number of applicants to our Affordable Housing Production Strategy Community Task Force. This task force will inform a recommendation to City Council on the additional ways we can make production of affordable housing easier. We are grateful for the high interest in this issue which is a top priority with Council. As always, feel free to share your ideas and thoughts with me anytime at k.mcbride@cityofhoodriver.gov.
