Message from the Mayor

I joined City Council 22 years ago and was first elected Mayor in 2014. Since then, the City has received countless “Best of…” awards. I like to joke that it’s because of the excellence in municipal leadership, but the real reason Hood River stands out is because of the many residents who contribute to making it the awesome place that it is. The latest magazine raved about our food, pottery, music, and Nordic skiing – not just the traditional assets like The River and Alpine skiing. There are so many people making small and large contributions that make Hood River superb. Keep it up, y’all. We’re creating a fantastic place for all of us.
However, there are big challenges ahead. The energy and water needs of artificial intelligence are very topical for our location, as is the employment threat of this technology. Climate change has narrowed the window between a rainy June and a smoky August. And income inequality and the high cost of living – driven by any number of government and business factors – threaten the livability and connectedness of our small town. To this, I also say keep it up, y’all, with the hard work. There is no silver bullet, but there is silver buckshot – a collection of actions the government and residents can take to lessen the amplitude of the changes.
As I wind down my 22 years in elected office, I am reminded of a recent favorite quote from Mary Oliver – “…much can never be redeemed. Still, life has some possibility left.” Embrace those possibilities! See you around town.
Onward! Adelante! Mayor Paul
