Message from the Mayor

As we wrap up the summer season, I am reminded how lucky we are to live in such a bountiful place – with plentiful water, local harvests, and places to enjoy the outdoors. In the last few months we have also seen an abundance of public participation at our City Council meetings. At a recent meeting, 28 people came to speak to Council, covering more than four separate issues! I encourage anyone who would like to learn more about local government and ways to get involved, to sign up for our first ever Civics Academy: Hood River 101. You can read more about the course and how to sign up in this issue.
Despite this abundance around us, we have also heard from many community members who are struggling to afford to live in Hood River. We are continually reminded of the hard path ahead as we seek solutions to the lack of affordable housing in the area. On a positive note, we are so pleased to have been awarded state LIFT funding that allows us to move forward on the 780 Rand Road Affordable Housing Development! While we are thrilled with this news, we also know that there is still so much work to be done.
I am also reminded that our community is not alone – Hood River recently hosted the Oregon Mayor’s Association Annual Conference. It was great to connect with mayors all over the state as we work together to find solutions to the common challenges our communities face.
Onward! Adelante!
Mayor Paul Blackburn
