Message from the Mayor

Kate McBrideI’d like to wish everyone a pleasant summer as we turn the corner on seasons. We hope the wetter than normal May will be a blessing this wildfire season, but want to urge everyone to continue to practice wildfire safety here and anywhere you go.

The City of Hood River continues to be very busy with goal-related projects in addition to its day-to-day operations bringing many services to residents and businesses. Council and I are always so proud of the great work coming from staff.
Sadly, like many organizations post-pandemic, the City is struggling with staffing shortages in many departments. I’d like to remind our community that the City of Hood River is a great place to work and to check out employment opportunities we currently have at cityofhoodriver.gov/employment-opportunities. Plus, see the related story in the Community Connections column of this newsletter.

Recently, we’ve lost a number of front office team members at City Hall and at other locations. As a result, the City will have temporary reduced hours this summer for City Hall, Public Works, and the Fire Station. These offices will be closed to the public on Fridays from June 10th until at least September 2nd due to staffing shortages. (Regular hours for the Police Station will not change.) The City intends to return to five-day per week availability for all offices after Labor day, but it will depend on hiring and training of new employees.

So please spread the word and thank you for your patience as we staff to our full capacity. Wishing everyone to a wonderful and safe summer season.

–Kate McBride
