Traffic light installation at 2nd and Oak
Installation of the traffic light at 2nd and Oak streets in downtown Hood River begins the first week of February 2024. This long-awaited project will help travel efficiency through the busy intersection, which attracts a high number of pedestrians as well as traffic traveling to and from the freeway.
Conflicts between different types of users of the intersection are especially heightened during the busy summer season. While the exact timeframe for construction will depend on various factors, including weather, construction is expected to last approximately three months, and should be completed before Memorial Day.
During construction, the entire intersection will be closed to vehicle traffic, with detours rerouting vehicles to nearby Cascade, State, 1st and 3rd Streets. Pedestrians and bicyclists will be able to continue to travel through the intersection despite sidewalk closures – crossing through the middle of the intersection instead. Parking on one side of the street will be available on 2nd and Oak on the blocks immediately adjacent to construction, with one side reserved for turnaround room (see image below).
The City of Hood River appreciates your patience and understanding during installation and will work with construction teams to keep businesses and the public updated as much as possible. Please plan ahead, use alternate routes, and give yourself extra time for travel if you use this intersection for your commute.
Additionally, the City reminds everyone to use caution and obey all traffic signs and construction signs during installation. This will ensure the safety and productivity of workers, as well as the safety of others travelling through the area.
