Message from the Mayor
Welcome Gladys Rivera to Hood River City Council! She has hit the ground running with previous experience on several boards, including Mayor Blackburn’s Latino Advisory Committee. Gladys is already speaking out on additional ways to help communication with Hood River’s Latinx community. It is refreshing to have your voice on the council, Gladys.
The 2020 Council Work Plan is shaping up now. Sixty-four citizens offered input into our Council goals and projects, along with City staff and community boards that all informed our Council work session in January. We have a packed schedule of projects we hope to accomplish this year. Some will involve planning efforts for long term projects like evaluating the wastewater treatment plant for efficiency, cost savings, and resiliency. Others will likely be shorter term, such as completing the parks master plan with our partners.
As part of the City’s commitment to reduce energy consumption, save money, and be more resilient, the City water line is being assessed for inline hydro turbine electrical generation. Preliminary studies find that this could generate close to 40% of electricity annually used in city municipal properties. More to come on this later in the year.
The City’s potential purchase of land off Rand Road will allow the City to begin planning some form of affordable and workforce housing. A master plan for the property would be developed that could include green space, parks, and or connective trails. This would be a very collaborative project with many citizens giving input for the best possible outcome for everyone.
