Fireworks Restrictions Strengthened to Reduce Fire Risk

The Hood River City Council has adopted new restrictions on the sale and use of consumer fireworks to reduce wildfire risk during dry summer months. The recently passed Ordinance 2090 amends Title 9 (Public Peace, Morals and Welfare), Chapter 9.36 (Weapons and Fireworks) of the Hood River Municipal Code (hoodriver.municipal.codes/) and will be officially adopted into the code on May 13.
Previously, consumer fireworks could be sold in the city only from June 23 to July 7, and could be used from November 14 to July 14 each year. Outside of those dates, both the sale and use of fireworks were prohibited.
However, in 2021, 2023, and 2024, the City issued emergency declarations banning fireworks during otherwise allowed summer periods due to extreme fire danger arising from dry, hot, and windy weather. These bans were often put in place just days before Independence Day—after residents had already purchased fireworks.
In response to these recurring fire risks and last-minute bans, the City Council has taken a proactive measure to protect the community and reduce confusion by implementing year-round restrictions.
Key Changes Under Ordinance 2090:
- The sale of consumer fireworks is now always prohibited within the City of Hood River.
- The use of consumer fireworks is restricted to a single window each year: from 6 p.m. on December 31 to 1 a.m. on January 1 (New Year’s Eve).
- Fireworks use is further prohibited if a fire emergency or burn ban is declared by the Hood River Fire Chief.
These changes apply only to consumer fireworks and do not affect permitted professional fireworks displays. The community is encouraged to celebrate holidays like Independence Day and New Year’s Eve by supporting and attending the public fireworks displays in Hood River and around the region.
