Employee Spotlight:
Greg Hagbery,
Development Administrator
Not all City of Hood River employees know what it feels like to be in the customer’s shoes. Greg Hagbery, however, is one of those employees whose experiences help him to understand the unique position of his customers. As the City’s Development Administrator, Greg assists applicants to navigate the City’s building permitting and development processes. His experience in the construction industry provides him with valuable perspective to support businesses and individuals looking to build homes and other structures here in Hood River.
Greg grew up “swinging a hammer” in a family with a long history of working in the trades and unions. However, after he experienced a construction accident falling from a roof, Greg explored other career options and returned to school to study architecture. After graduating, he found work developing 3D models to help key decision-makers reimagine their military bases. He realized that he enjoyed long-term planning and working on broader community issues.
In 2012, Greg moved to Hood River and initially got a job in sales at a windsurf and kiteboard manufacturing business. He eventually got back into the construction industry, managing the land development arm of a local home building company. He was excited to work in the public sector when he accepted a position for the Port of Hood River as their Land Development, Property and Airport Manager. “In my heart of hearts, I want to look back and feel like I’ve done something positive for my community,” he said. Now, with his position as the Development Administrator, he is able to combine his interests, skills, and experiences while giving back to the community.
Greg understands the challenges and nuances that builders face during the permitting processes and recognizes that certain criteria can seem complicated, confusing, and frustrating. One of his primary goals in this position is to improve communication and education to help applicants make informed decisions. “Education is one of the key components moving forward… this role is steering people in the right direction and showing them the roadmap for success,” Greg said. He aims to support to all those looking to build, from experienced developers to first-time homebuilders.
During his first year, Greg has acquired his Building Official certification and familiarized himself more fully with City building code and permitting processes. He especially values the positive energy from other staff, even in the face of sometimes challenging work circumstances.
In his spare time, Greg decompresses and relaxes after a long day by playing music. If you ever decide to build something in Hood River, Greg will be there to help you through the process.
