Recycling Modernization comes to Oregon

Oregon’s Plastic Pollution and Recycling Modernization Act (RMA) is designed to improve recycling. It will establish a new framework for sharing the costs of recycling among local governments, recycling companies, and the producers of packaging and paper products.
What You Can Expect
- Beginning in July 2025, all community members and businesses in Oregon will be able to recycle a consistent set of materials, known as the Universal Statewide Collection List.
- In the coming years, additional materials will be accepted for recycling at designated depots. The facilities that sort your recycling are upgrading to improve sorting – it will take time to get these facilities in place, especially in rural areas.
- You’ll receive clear and straightforward recycling information, which will help you recycle confidently.
- Recycling facilities will have more tracking and transparency. This will help ensure your recyclables are processed for reuse.
Why This Matters
The RMA aims to improve recycling by bringing consistency, transparency, and new funding into the system. This improved framework is designed to be simpler, more effective, and trustworthy, no matter where you live in Oregon.
What Can You Do?
- Continue recycling! Every time you recycle correctly, you make a positive difference.
- Recycle materials on the Universal Statewide Collection List in curbside bins and at the Hood River Garbage transfer station.
