Maintaining Safe Streets and Sidewalks for Travel

Travelling in the winter months can be challenging for people walking, biking, using transit, or driving. Cooperation and compliance to keep the City’s right-of-way clear and streets safe is important in every season, and especially critical in the winter months. Everyone shares the responsibility for maintaining clear sidewalks and following proper snow removal procedures.

City right-of-way is the area designated for public streets, sidewalks, and utilities. City code requires property owners to maintain sidewalks and curbs adjacent to their property in safe, serviceable condition for pedestrians and vehicles. Unfortunately, every year, many snow-covered sidewalks become unpassable due to non-compliance with these codes.
When clearing snow from sidewalks, place snow in the yard areas, and not on the curbs or in the streets. The City also appreciates your help in keeping catch basins clear to keep water flowing and prevent streets from flooding. If you know the location of your nearest fire hydrant, please help to keep it clear of snow.
Following winter street regulations also helps to keep our streets safe. Street parking is restricted during significant snowfall for snow plowing. Avoid parking on the street when possible. City crews are not able to “pick up” their plows near driveways because it leaves excess snow in the roadway. For more winter streets information, including snow plow routes and priorities, visit: cityofhoodriver.gov/public-works/streets/winter-street-information.
If you encounter a snowplow or sander on the road, follow these safe driving tips:
- Give plows and sanding trucks room to maneuver; do not follow too closely.
- Do not pass trucks when snow is being plowed or sand is being applied.
- Do not pull out into the intersection when snowplow trucks are approaching.
The City of Hood River appreciates your cooperation in keeping public rights-of-way safe and clear this winter!
