Safe Routes to School Updates
Since finishing the Hood River Safe Routes to School Plan in March 2022, the City has been making steady progress on projects to create safer streets for kids walking, biking and rolling to school.
In 2025, the City received a grant to help set goals and prioritize project implementation. You can read the City Threads Grant Report here: cityofhoodriver.gov/community/safe-routes-to-schools/
Completed projects so far include:
- A multi-use path on 18th Street between Belmont and May.
- A stop sign at 17th and May, creating a full three-way stop.
- A “School Street” on 9th and Pine at May Street Elementary School.
The City is also working with Hood River Middle School to improve traffic flow and safety.
Upcoming changes include:
- Completion of the bike path on 17th Street from May to Sherman.
- A new drop-off/pick-up zone along May Street.
- Additional parking and bus parking options on May Street.
- Enhanced safety features at the school bus entrance and exit.
These improvements are designed to give students and families safe, clearly defined spaces to arrive and leave school—whether they are walking, biking, riding the bus, or driving.
Safer routes to school create safer streets for everyone and expand transportation options for our community.
