Message from the Mayor

Happy fall everyone! I hope you had a great summer. It seems like we largely escaped the smoke (thanks firefighters!), and the cooler weather is arriving.
Some memorable events from mine include visiting Tsuruta, our Sister City in Japan this summer with a wonderful group of kids and school staff. I’m so glad so many folks have been able to make this cultural exchange; let’s field a strong delegation for the 50th anniversary trip in 2027!
This summer I also experienced construction and disruption in front of our house on the Heights. As we accomplish necessary infrastructure maintenance, we are of course doing it amidst the daily lives of all of us who live here. This season saw big projects on Montello Ave. (article in this edition) and at the waterfront. Sewer, stormwater, electricity, natural gas, water – all of it flows quietly beneath our streets, AND requires maintenance and repair (thanks public works!).
On another note, our work to make Hood River a more affordable place to live is often a contentious issue. We are being sued to relax our Short-Term Rental restrictions; I disagree with this and hope we prevail in court. Lastly, we recently welcomed our newest Councilor Ben Mitchell, and we will have a couple more after November’s election; Megan Saunders and Mark Zanmiller are stepping down after multiple terms. I feel fortunate for the opportunity to work alongside such committed, talented colleagues, and look forward to seeing what our new City Council will accomplish.
Happy fall y’all! Mayor Paul
