Fire Safety Spring Cleaning
As the weather begins to warm, it’s important to prepare homes for fire safety. There are several steps that community members can take to help protect living spaces from the risk of fires. These steps include checking appliances within the home, creating defensible space outside, and grilling safely.
This spring, make sure to Spring Clean for Fire Safety!
Inside your home:
- Check smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
- Don’t use appliances with frayed chords.
- Check for water around electrical appliances.
- Clean lint trap and exhaust duct.
Outside your home:
- Grill safely – check grills for rust, grease, worn parts and debris, and only use them at least 10 feet away from structures.
- Remove dead and combustible plants and mulch, especially within the first several feet from the home.
- Remove dead leaves, pine needles, and other debris from around foundations, decks, porches, and stairs.
- Trim trees and bushes to make sure they are spaced appropriately from your home and other vegetation.
- Trim tall plants and bushes growing directly under your eaves.
- Cover exterior attic vents, soffit vents, and areas below decks and patios with 1/8” metal wire mesh.
