City Adopts New Ordinance to Address Storage of Vehicles on City Streets
Hood River City Council recently adopted an ordinance to address the storage of vehicles in the public right-of-way. Ordinance 2078 amends the City’s Municipal Code prohibiting motor vehicles, recreational vehicles, trailers or personal property to remain parked in the same location “without moving to a different location at least two blocks away within each one-week period of time” (CoHR.MC § 10.36.020).
The City reached this decision after receiving numerous complaints from residents regarding vehicles stored on public streets for extended periods of time, sometimes for several years. Vehicles stored in the public right-of-way for extended periods of time present problems for street sweeping and snow plowing. Lacking municipal code to address the issue, City Council directed staff to research options for parking restrictions. After initially discussing a 72-hour parking ordinance, a common parking limit for many municipalities, Council decided that a one-week period (168 hours) was a more appropriate timeframe for the community. Enforcement will begin with police attempting to contact the vehicle’s owner, issuing a warning, and giving a timeframe to comply.
The new law went into effect on October 11, 2023.
