#4 May Street and 13th Street Roundabout

The City’s Urban Renewal Agency gave its direction for a recommended alternative for the Heights Streetscape Plan. The process, which has received broad community input for alternatives for 12th and 13th streets in the Heights, now proceeds to Phase 3 for refinement of the preferred alternative. Description

New roundabout at the intersection of 13th and May Streets, designed to address existing issues, help maintain traffic flow, minimize delays, and provide safe crossings. The roundabout may be initially built with a single lane with additional turn lanes added as traffic volumes demand them. A new two-way cycle track is integrated into the intersection.

Why This Project?

A roundabout at 13th and May Street is essential to manage the level of traffic on 13th Street once it is converted to a two-way street and traffic is directed away from 12th Street. A roundabout provides a smooth traffic flow for emergency vehicles, freight, and through traffic.  Smooth traffic flow also ensures that through-traffic vehicles choose this route instead of 12th Street which will be a slow-speed bike and pedestrian friendly route.

A roundabout also creates a safe route between local schools, parks, and other neighborhood destinations for bikes and pedestrians. On average, roundabouts reduce the number of crashes resulting in injury or loss of life by 78%-82% (Highway Safety Manual, American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, Washington, DC, 2010.). Roundabouts increase safety for all users by having fewer conflict points, lower speeds, and shorter crossing distances.

Key Features

  • New roundabout intersection design
  • Integrated two-way cycle track
  • Safe pedestrian crossings at all approaches
  • Maintained traffic flow with minimal delays
  • Connection between schools, parks, and neighborhoods

Community Goals Addressed

  • Calm Traffic & Improve Intersections
  • Safe Comfortable Streets for People
  • Promote Livable Community & Economy

Location

  • 13th & May Street
