Description
Curb extensions, Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFBs), “Piano Key” crosswalks to improve access and safety at the key East/West crossings at Taylor Avenue and A Street crossing on 13th Street.
Crossing enhancements are focused on two east/west crossing points. It is not best practice to place RRFBs at every intersection because motorists will begin to disregard them. These two intersections were chosen to draw pedestrian traffic away from the Belmont and May Street intersections which will require much more complex improvements. Taylor Avenue is also a defined Safe Route to School.
Why This Project?
Intersection improvements across 13th Street are a quick and relatively lower cost option to improve neighborhood access and safety that do not require more comprehensive changes to traffic flow. These crossings are critical for connecting the east and west sides of the Heights neighborhood.
