Westside Forum

July 28, 2017 – author-Andrew Parish

http://www.hoodrivernews.com/news/2017/jul/29/westside-forum/

Eileen Garvin passes out question forms to members of the audience of 125 at Wednesday’s forum on the City of Hood River Westside Area Concept Plan (WACP). At left, Heather Staten of Hood River Valley Residents Committee gives an overview of the City of Hood River’s process.

Other speakers included Bonnie New of Aging in the Gorge Alliance; builder Mike Kitts; Joel Madsen of the Mid-Columbia Housing Authority and a WACP Technical Advisory Committee member; and bicycling advocates Megan Ramey and Jonathan Graca, who announced an upcoming on-the-ground “audit” of proposed bike routes in the WACP.

One change announced at the forum: the next meeting in the WACP process has been postponed to Aug. 16; it’s the TAC and Project Advisory Committee, starting at 3 p.m. at City Hall. See hrwestsideplan.com for details.

July 21, 2017 – author-Andrew Parish

The local advocacy groups will host an event on July 26, “What’s Up With Westside? A Forum on Hood River’s Future,” at the Columbia Center for the Arts, 6:30-8:30 p.m.

Heather Staten, executive director, Hood River Valley Residents Committee, which sponsors the forum along with Liveable Hood River.

Staten will give an overview of Westside Area Project and process being conducted by the City of Hood River, with an emphasis on zoning and planning for parks, roads, housing, and pedestrian and bike paths.

Panelists will be Joel Madsen, Mid Columbia Housing Authority executive director; Mike Kitts, a local developer; Mark Hickok, Hood River Valley Parks and Recreation executive director; Bonnie New, Aging in the Gorge Alliance (land use and transportation for seniors); and Megan Ramey and Jonathan Graca — bicycle-pedestrian and multi-modal planning.

Anyone wishing to submit questions ahead of time for the panelists to address may send them to heather@hrvrc.org.

Staten said, “There have been so many questions from the public about the Westside Area Concept Plan that Livable Hood River and Hood River Valley Residents Committee have decided to put on a public forum with a panel of speakers to help get more information into the conversation.”

About 100 community members filled the city council chambers Wednesday for the meeting of the Westside Concept Plan Project Advisory Council (PAC). Members of the newly-formed citizen group CORD — Citizens for Responsible Development — presented a copy of a position signed by 500 people asking the city not rezone areas of the Westside within the plan boundaries.

Citizen group rises to oppose Westside plan

June 24, 2017 – author-Andrew Parish

A new citizen group has formed to oppose the proposed City of Hood River’s Westside Concept Plan.

“For most Hood River citizens, our city is a place where everyone is safe and boasts an exceptional quality of life. Our many ‘Best Places to Live’ awards remind us of that,” said Citizens for Responsible Development spokeswoman Kristi Chapman.

“The proposed Westside Area Concept plan (WAC) puts this at risk. It will significantly change Hood River and our surrounding communities, and severely challenge our already strained and underfunded infrastructure — and few citizens even know about it,” she said.
