Waterfront Stormwater Relocation Project Complete!
Stormwater travelling through downtown Hood River now follows a new path and filtration process before reaching the Columbia River. We are pleased to announce that the Waterfront Stormwater Relocation Project is complete!
Originally installed in the 1960s, the old stormwater line had significantly deteriorated and posed risks to buildings constructed above it. This multi-year, multi-phase capital improvement project included:
- safely filling and retiring the old stormwater line from underneath businesses at the waterfront;
- moving and building the new stormwater line under the public right-of-way;
- installing filtration stations for the downtown area stormwater; and,
- restoring nearby wetlands, amongst many other tasks.
While construction is finished, the restored wetlands require ongoing maintenance while the plantings establish over the next two years.
The completion of this project represents a major investment in the long-term health and safety of both our community and the environment.
Although stormwater is filtered before flowing into the river, it is important to note that it does not undergo treatment at the Wastewater Treatment Plant. Please remember that catch basins are for rain and snowmelt to help prevent flooding. Never pour anything other than water into them.
Thank you to all the City staff and contractors whose hard work made this project possible!
