City issues toilet “flushing” reminders.
Protect the City’s sewer system. Important reminder during this public health crisis: Do not put anything down the toilet except human waste and toilet paper.
ONLY TOILET PAPER
-No cleansing wipes (even if labeled flushable)
-No disinfecting wipes
-No paper towels or paper napkins
Toilet paper is made to disintegrate as it flows through the sewer system, while wipes don’t easily break down. If you do use wipes, place them in the trash, not the toilet. Wipes clog pipes and pumps. They can get caught on foreign material in pipes, causing blockages. Wipes also plug the pumps at City lift stations. Sewage backups in the City’s sanitary sewer system — and even in homes — can result.
The City of Hood River also reminds residents that a backwater valve is required at each home. They are free from the Public Works department. While City offices remain closed to the public, we will deliver them to your door upon request — Call 541-386-2383 or email M.Messmer@cityofhoodriver.gov.
