Employee Spotlight – Nubia Sánchez-Contreras
Nubia Sánchez-Contreras has joined the City of Hood River as Community Engagement Coordinator, a new position for the City. In her role, she will develop and manage outreach programs or events. She will also be a key city contact for community partnerships and relationships.
In addition to working on communications and outreach in English and Spanish, she will make sure a wide range of voices are heard for input on City projects and services. She will also assist project managers to make more rapid progress on City Council’s work plan projects.
In developing this position, the City was looking for a strong candidate with experience working with communities of color, immigrant populations, rural populations, and other disadvantaged populations. Nubia’s fluency in Spanish and English will be an asset to the City.
Nubia was born in Hood River and raised in the local area, where she attended school and has been employed at various positions. She worked previously as a community health worker for Bridges to Health. Before that she was a prevention specialist for Hood River County. Nubia has also held a part-time position as a Latinx Community Coordinator for Columbia Center for the Arts. Other positions are mainly in education and government.
Nubia’s been actively involved in the community. She continues to be a DJ and is now vice president at Radio Tierra, a local Spanish-speaking radio station. She is also past founder and coordinator for Latinx Advocates, an organization that identifies gaps in services for the Latino community.
